The Theme

The Theme is the unifying element of your wedding. Its what ties it all together. And these days it can be ANYTHING. This is not your mother's wedding. Push the envelope. But most importantly make it about you and you future husband, because that's why everybody's showing up! What is a theme? Well it can be as simple or hard as you want.

Color: Your theme can be colors. Love the color pink and all it entails? Boom, there's your theme. Do you look fantastic in blue? Why not have it surround you on your big day?

If you want to go with color as your theme, run with it! Incorporate it everywhere you can. Invitations, table linens, bridesmaid dresses, decor, and the easiest of all: flowers!

Location: Your location is also a very big factor in determining your theme. If you're getting married on a beach you can't very well have a super formal affair, the guests would get sand all of their evening gowns and furs. But you can embody the relaxed easygoing vibe laying on a beach, soaking up the sun for your wedding day.

If you're getting married at a historical site (think plantation, museum, castle) honor the history of the place. You can play up the southern charm at a beautiful plantation. Your guests can lounge on the wrap-around porch drinking Mint Juleps.

Decor: Decor is the easiest way to inject your theme into your nuptials. Having a garden wedding? Surround your environment in nature, beautiful arrangements of flowers taking center stage. A tea party wedding: tea cups duh?! A Dramatic Broadway theme? You better have playbills on those tables. A beach affair encourages starfish, shells, and tropical flowers.

How do you pick your theme?
Focus on what you like, what your interests are, your style, and don't forget about your fiance either! Do you both love art? How about getting married in a museum with the gorgeous pieces to compliment your big day, an avant garde edge added to everything. Is he an avid golfer? Golf courses are some of the most beautiful landscapes. And personalized golf tees are adorable favors. Are you both big dramatic over the top personalities? A glam take on Broadway would be super fun. Theatres make great spaces for entertaing as well. And I know I mentioned the playbill thing.

And then think back to your girlhood imaginings of your wedding day. Have you always envisioned your self getting married barefoot under the sun surrounding by family? Have you imagined a grand entrance through beautiful church doors? Is it important to get married in the church you or your fiance grew up in? All these things will dictate your wedding day.

Stick with it
You determine how much you incorporate your theme. It can be simple little touches here and there or you can tell your guests they have to dress in costume to match your 1920s flapper wedding! But always remember to focus on what YOU like, and not what other people think you should do.

Because it's all about you, right?
